Why can’t you advertise anti-wrinkle injections, botox, dermal filler, or lip filler treatments online?
In March 2024, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) strengthened its rules around how cosmetic injectable services can be advertised in Australia. The TGA reminded healthcare providers that treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, fat-dissolving injections, lip fillers, and similar products are Schedule 4 prescription medicines. Because of this, they cannot be promoted in any form of advertising.
The rules also prevent clinics from showing before-and-after photos or listing prices for these treatments. The TGA can issue fines or take legal action against businesses that breach these guidelines.
The TGA explains that clinics must not make any direct or indirect reference to prescription-only substances when advertising cosmetic services. This applies to full names, shortened terms, nicknames, abbreviations, acronyms, hashtags, and anything else a consumer could reasonably link to a prescription medicine.
This includes references such as:
- Anti-wrinkle injections
- Botox
- Dermal fillers
- Lip filler
- Injectable products used to improve the appearance of submental fullness
